What is Bitcoin dominance?
Bitcoin dominance is Bitcoin’s market capitalization divided by the total cryptocurrency market capitalization, shown as a percentage.
How it is calculated
If Bitcoin’s market cap is $1.7T and the whole crypto market is $2.7T, dominance is about 63%. Ethereum and “Others” fill the rest of the bar on the dashboard.
Why people watch it
- Rising dominance can mean capital is concentrating in Bitcoin relative to other coins.
- Falling dominance can mean altcoins are gaining share of total market cap.
- It is a share metric, not a price forecast. Dominance can rise while BTC’s dollar price falls, if the rest of the market falls faster.
